About Me
I will not insult anyone’s intelligence by saying I don’t understand why I have a weight problem since I am intelligent and blah blah blah these are my credentials 😀 – Actually I read that, as a justification, in a weight loss blog. Intelligence doesn’t have anything to do with weight problems. In fact, in my view and experience, the more you know about weight loss and diets the most difficult it becomes as the choice widens as many factors come into consideration.
I am 57 years old at the time of writing this (Aug 27, 2013) and had a weight problem since I was 28. The photo in the left was taken in November 2012, when I was 184 lbs and I had just moved to Southern Spain from the UK.
I have been dieting since then and I think I changed my metabolism and I put weight very easily now but at the same time I must say that, any diet I have ever been in, it has worked. The problem, obviously, is keeping it off for me.
I won’t bore with all the diets I’ve been on, but I would say that I am very interested in diet and nutrition and having academic rather than practical leanings, I have studied them all!
My weight loss history:
Up to 21 (1977) I lived in Argentina and did not have a weight problem, I was about 136 lbs / 9 st 10 lbs / 62 Kg which was correct for my bone structure (large) and my height of 5 ft 6 “. Here you can see a photo of mine when I was 13 (I am the one in the middle of two cousins) You can see I was not a thin child but neither an overweight one. By the way I weighed myself for the first time at 16. I remember dates and my weight at each stage!
In Argentina due to immigration up to 1950s, we have a mixture of cuisines. The cuisine is Mediterranean (Italian and Spanish) with loads of beef added and also influenced, where I lived, from Eastern European cuisine. We ate loads of fruits and salads and of course, olive oil. The typical Sunday lunch is home made pasta, although in our house was barbecue.
In 1977 I moved to England UK, I had met an Englishman in Argentina who proposed and I accepted marriage. My weight settled between 140 lbs and 147 lbs. (10 st to 10 st 7 lbs – 64 -67 Kg)
From 1977 to 1984 – I did not have a weight problem but kept following silly magazine diets to reduce my weight to 128 lbs – by 8 lbs / 3.5 Kg, I’ve succeeded but always put the weight on as my natural weight was 136 lbs. I now believe I ruined my metabolism doing that.
My weight problem started in 1984 where two major things happened in my life, I was in the last year of my degree I had decided continue studying for my professional examinations and my first husband decided to leave his job as trouble shooter in the Merchant Navy and that caused me anxiety as up to then, my husband was away for four months and two at home. (Making ideal conditions for studying.)
That was the personal changes, externally food stated becoming more available. Proliferation of fast foods outlets together with chilled food at the supermarkets.
I remember putting on 7 lbs (3.5 kg) and being horrified, 154 lbs :O . Then started the period of my life of putting on weight, losing it and putting more back on. I started reading books about nutrition and health (I still have most of the library on that subject). To no avail. I am trying to formalize years of nutrition reading into a diploma at the moment as I am so interested.
I came to the conclusion that I am an emotional eater. I did not lack willpower when a new diet appeared, in fact, I always lost on it, the maximum weight loss advised by the diet.
I remember when I decided I would be my ideal weight and achieve my weight loss by the millennium! I used a VLCD of around 300 cals a day, and reached my target of 140 lbs by the 1st December 1999. All the 15 years accumulated knowledge about nutrition and I chose a VLCD! You know what I mean that sometimes our mind makes us do things against our knowledge and what we believe are best practices.
I always remember that by the 21 December I had put back 9 lbs and by the first week of January after the Christmas weight I was back to 158 lbs (11 st 4 lbs /71 kg)
So I continued on a roller coaster of putting weight on and losing it and putting more on. My maximum weight was 212 lbs (15 st 2 lbs / 95 kg) and that was reached in 2005 after my divorce.
I married again in 2008, and my husband doesn’t care about my weight. He actually said: “There is more to love if you are fat” 😀 at the same time being supportive when I go on a diet because he recognises that it is important to me.
Why I want to achieve my weight loss goals
I have really thought this time why I want to be at my ideal weight and here are the reasons:
- I am doing for me and only me. (I think this is very important!)
- When I am overweight I lose interest in clothes and then do wear the same things or now my husband’s t-shirts. Why I don’t know, but that’s me. I really admire overweight women that make the best of themselves, but I don’t.
- I really want to continue enjoying the good health I have. I think it is in everyone’s control to have the best life that they can possible can.
- The way to go is to eat natural foods not processed ones.
My mantra: Remember, the key to permanent weight loss is developing healthy eating and exercise habits.
