Until recently the main advice for good nutrition was “eat fresh food and stay away from chips (French fries)”. It is still so important to avoid processed foods, so that still applies but we now know so much more about foods and super-foods.
Olive Oil Health Benefits:
The best olive oil for health is the extra virgin, cold pressed and where possible organic. Some researchers believe that the health benefits of olive oil may still be untapped and many have indicated regular ingestion of olive oil may be one of the best kept health secrets available.
Major benefits
- Contributes to cell formation, which is so important as they affect all the body and its organs.
- Improves brain function.
- Assists in lowering the bad cholesterol and significantly increases the good cholesterol.
- Reduce the production of gallstones
Minor Benefits:
- It has healing and anti-inflammatory effects.
- Stimulates the flow of bile.
- Inhibits lactic activity in the liver (a sign of malfunction)
- Protects against the formation of fatty acids and cholesterol
- Decreases cholesterol absorption from foods.
A study by the University of Barcelona proved the benefits of olive oil in reducing the bad cholesterol.
I have not even touched on the uses of olive oil for skin care as I concentrated on the health benefits first. A more complete list can be found HERE
Let’s not regret like Leon Eldred, who said: “If I’d known I was going to live so long, I’d have taken better care of myself.”
Typical Mediterranean pottery to keep olive oil in. I always thought that Italy’s olive oil was the best, but I tried once some special Greek one and it was truly delicious. I have become accustomed to Spanish olive oil which is not a nutty as others.

For a long time, that’s all I used. I’ve recently switched to coconut oil though.

I love coconut oil as well. I use it a lot. I never used to cook but now I always start with the Spanish “sofrito” onion, garlic and herbs fried in olive oil.

I love olive oil, and even put in on my popcorn. Lately we try lots of different varieties for different flavors.

I use oil when cooking, but not EVOO. My husband can’t stand the taste of it.
