Decrease Caffeine
Caffeine works in the opposite way to the meditation effect. Caffeine increases anxiety and makes the body prone to stress and the increase in anxiety means irritability and a short fuse.
How much caffeine is in coffee?
The amount of caffeine varies but as a rough guide:
- A regular cup of coffee contains 90 to 150 mg of caffeine.
- A coffee machine (drip machine) 115 to 175, other types like the capsules between 80 to 135 mg
- An espresso might contain as much caffeine as a regular cup. Furthermore caffeine is assimilated quicker when ingested in a concentrated dosage such as an espresso
People hypersensitive to caffeine might drink decaffeinated coffee. Normally caffeine is extracted from the beans by solvents called chlorinated hydrocarbons but a much healthier way is extracting by rinsing the beans. I have always looked for naturally decaffeinated coffee such as Cafe Hag, a German make. Here in Spain it is quite difficult to find it. It was easier in the UK. I buy the pods for my Tassimo from eBay UK but they are delivered from Germany.
So if you truly love the taste of coffee but you are affected by it you can always switch to decaffeinated .
Other Products that contain caffeine
Some people do not realise that caffeine is present in many products such as:
- Tea
- Chocolate
- Cola
- And some medicines (1 Midol has 32 mgs and 1 Excedrin has 85 mgs)
Caffeine and Insomnia
- Many people are affected by caffeine and they suffer from insomnia. Caffeine is the substance most connected with insomnia.
- It may also hinder sleep by its diuretic effect that stimulates the kidneys causing people to have to urinate more frequently during the night.
- People differ greatly in their sensitivity to caffeine and many develop a tolerance to it
A personal experience
Years ago I started working for an accountancy client from home. I used to go to their place of business Mondays and Fridays and the other three days I worked from home. I had a modem and a fax machine (the internet wasn’t as developed as today as it was 1994). I suddenly couldn’t sleep and I started investigating reasons why. I realized that I was making in the morning four large cups of coffee on my drip machine and again in the afternoon when I was working from home. That was the culprit. I reduced it and voila I could sleep again.
So I am one of those people that are affected by it, whereas my husband can drink a double espresso before going to sleep and he is not affected.
Anyone that follows me knows that I drink yerba mate. It has a natural substance like caffeine but it doesn’t seem to affect people as much.(en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yerba_mate)
Other adverse effects of Caffeine
- Caffeine increases the secretion of stress hormones such as adrenaline so if a person is already secreting higher stress hormones caffeine adds to the stress
- Caffeine stimulates the brain in ways similar to amphetamines even though it is much milder.
- Caffeine used to be used in clinical settings to induce panic attacks in patients. That certainly gives food for thought.
I believe caffeine is one of those substances we need to be aware of and by trial and error find out how it really affects us.

Caffeine does affect me if I drink it too late at night. I’m not a coffee drinker, but I love a good cup of tea (hot or cold) and will drink a soft drink with caffeine maybe once a day! Thanks for sharing.
