There has been a tendency in the last few years, in the Western Word to buy organic foods where possible. I have problems in finding organic foods here in Malaga, whereas in Manchester they were readily available in supermarkets.
I know organic seems to be the buzz word but do we really know what it means? There are, perhaps, million of different sites that define organic, for me the simplest way of looking at it is: organic food is food that is grown without any sort of man made substances being poured over it, around it and even inserted under it. The condition for the growing of the organic matter has to be composed of 100% natural environment.
Therefore, it follows that any food to be classified as being an organic food it needs to be free from all genetically modified internal cell structures. The plant must be like the ones that you see growing in the wild – but ones that we can eat without getting poisoned – and their inner cell structure should not have been tampered with.
The next condition is that land where the crop has grown is also 100% organic. It must be free from all traces of chemicals. A conventional farm to move to organic growth must uproot all conventionally grown crop and then leave the land without planting for 2 to 4 years. Then the land is fertilized with organic material and then only then the organic food can be grown.
Therefore, all of us, whatever the side, could convert our kitchen garden to organic (I am planning a pot as I live in the city and do not have a large garden) I will grow organic herbs.
Organic growing makes use of friendly bugs to keep the unfriendly bugs out. It is a fascinating subject and well worth spending time studying.
The entire combination package of chemical free land, organically produced plants and environmentally safe pesticides – read spiders and ladybugs here – along with protective, sweet smelling (to us that is) plants is what is ultimately meant by the organic food definition.
I will use just personal experience, in no particular order:
- food tastes better;
- we are helping the environment
- we are not taken harmful chemicals that we do not really know what are the consequences.

We live a very “organic” life style due to my sons medical conditions. I have to say at first it was so hard to find foods. We visited farmers markets and started to invest in a garden of our own. Now Wegmans has started to supply a lot of healthy organic options as well.

I know, being used to the UK, I find it very annoying not being able to find everyday organic foods. Of, course, I can get some from health shops. Thank you for visiting

Great information – thank you! There are definitely many compelling reasons to eat organic, no matter how much of a challenge it may be to source the foods.

All started for me 12 years ago, when I went to my native Argentina for the first time in years and I noticed that the food tasted better. As Argentina is so big (land mass) but only has about 42 million inhabitants many grow things, that although not certified organic, do taste better.
