We were told when kids to chew well and with the mouth close. Also not to choke. Well adults you would expect us to have it sorted out 🙂 But it is amazing the amount of people that eats fast and yes choke. I’ve been observing people and they are not necessarily the obese as some obese people eat extremely slow.
Having said that I believe there are 4 main reasons for not eating fast
-
It takes long to feel fuller and thus over eat.
You tend to eat more than you really need and and not only might put weight on but also feel too full afterwards
-
You might not get all the nutrients needed.
Food release all the nutriments when chewed properly and mixed with the saliva.
-
You might get a digestive upset.
Chewing is the first step in digestion. Your teeth, tongue, and saliva all work together to begin the moistening, breaking down, and digestion of food. If you eat quickly without ample chew time, you gulp air and swallow food that is not broken down into small enough pieces for proper (and easier) digestion. All of this can trigger indigestion, bloating, gas, and bacteria-gathering feces that linger in your colon.
-
You might not relax and enjoy the company.
One of the lovely things of Latin families were the long drawn out meals, although these are becoming a thing of the past due to time constraints of modern life. One way to eat slowly and enjoy the company would be to eat small amounts and chew them properly, do not allow another morsel to enter your mouth until the last has been thoroughly chewed.
I personally tend to eat fast and I shouldn’t, or eat when distracted. I’ve just had my midday meal while writing the blog post and that’s a no no. I don’t even remember the flavors and that is a no no.
Something very strange happened to a friend of ours. He is a retired doctor but like me, he tends to eat fast. At the beginning of August he felt very ill, and nobody could find what it was. He was feeling with constant fever. Suddenly they found he had an abscess on his lung. It took him incredible amount of antibiotics to cure. He lost so much weight as he did not eat for a fortnight. Luckily he has recovered fully without any sequel. All was put to either water or a food particle entering the lung when he must have choked.

Very interesting post indeed. We try really hard in this house to down tools during meals so we can enjoy our flavours. Eating more slowly is something I can definitely work on. Thanks for a very interesting blog. Happy weekend.

I come to you via UBC! In our house we do not have the problem of fast eaters. I have a 15 year old and a 10 year old and when it comes to eating they take FOREVER! A meal that should take 15 minutes to eat could drag on for 30-45 minutes, they savor every bite!

That’s great, you should write a blog post about it 🙂 Thank you for popping by.

Wonderful idea and something that I know to be very true. There is something to be said about slowing down and savory the food and conversation that can be had. And as you have pointed out, it leads to a full feeling without the trend to over eat.
